Working day 27th May 2016

Hello Everyone it's me again.

Another working day on Saturday 27th and thanks to all that turned out to help.
Also on Saturday the former engineering officer David Peacock and Matt Jackson came to assist in assessing 40106's boiler. Following initial tests and inspection it is looking favourable at the early stage that 40106 will be steaming this winter.

Work carried out is as follows:

Boiler water tanks filled and there are numerous leaks in the tanks due to there age but we think that with some careful patching up we can get a year or two out of the tanks before we renew them.

We have difficulties getting the water to pick up from the tanks and we suspect that the boiler water pick up in the tanks maybe blocked or corroded this will be investigated next time.

David managed to get boiler coils full of water but due to water pump seals having been dry for a number of years the seals are passed their best and will not pressurize the coil to test its integrity.

Some minor re-wiring work will be needed on the boiler stack switch but other than that it looks in very good order.

I am also pleased after standing for 7 days the engine started without issue so it looks like the start batteries have come around.

Paul Cobbe also spent a few hours cleaning the bogies on B side of the loco and they are nearly as clean as the bodysides. Job well done Paul.


Derek and Jonny set to steam cleaning 40135's boiler and coil unit and removing redundant pipe work and removing flexible hoses for new hoses to be made up.

Jonny has removed the pressure gauge for cleaning up and re-marking safe working pressure line that had faded somewhat over the years.

The next stage will be welding work on exhaust stack, stripping and overhaul blowdown valve, cleaning and painting boiler frame and carcass.

40135 will be going into Carriage works on Friday for completion of cosmetic work to the nose ends and will appear with full yellow ends supporting 40135 TOPS numbers and old style data panels.

40 145

Exam work continues on 345 will attention to main and auxiliary generators that needed brush lengths checking and a light clean. Load regulator motor has also been inspected.

Hello Again,

Well there's quite a bit to report since my last post!

40106 has been transferred from the Bo'ness & Kinniel Railway to the ELR last Thursday and Friday arriving on ELR metals and her new home at 14:00 hrs, Slightly later than planned as we had issues trying to start loco up due to flat batteries.

Following shunting loco to the locomotive works I checked batteries over and found them seriously lacking in electrolyte. I topped all 48 cells up with around 37 litres of distilled water and put loco on charge overnight on a low charge.  The loco started up on Saturday morning without issue.

We had another working party on Saturday mainly to ensure 40106 was well presented. All worked hard to wash 40106 and clean cabs and polish bits and bobs to ensure loco is kept in the condition that she has always been in immaculate.

The working group also managed to give 345 a much needed wash too and refit a replacement body to bogie air hose to make loco fully operational again.

We also managed to get a line up of all three loco's and they looked the business almost like days of old at Newton Heath we were just missing a couple of 25's and 31's.

40106 has made it d├ębut on the East Lancs Railway last Sunday. The loco performed extremely well, there's a few minor tweaks required to her but nothing major.

A huge thanks must go out to all who attended to support the CFPS and the ELR on her debut and John also raised a good bit of cash in sales, donations and raffle money which made it all very worthwhile.

We have another working party this Saturday and  will report on going's on in due course.

CFPS Engineering Blog Back In Action!!

Hello Everyone .......

The Class 40 Preservation Society engineering blog is back!!! after almost two years of inactivity the popular blog page has returned with lots of news to report.

Since my last blog post which was in October 2014 much has happened within the society and the engineering team.  We have a good team standing around 20 people who are regular contributors to the society's engineering team now known as the Oily rags. Without their dedication our society's beloved locomotives would be stuffed and mounted!!

The biggest news items in the recent months has been the successful purchase of D306 (40106) "Atlantic Conveyor" from Neil Boden which was previously owned by his father Gerald who secured the loco from BR back in 1984. The locomotive has always been maintained and kept in an immaculate state and its credit to both Neil and his father.

 The society now owns on of each head code type, disc, centre and split box nose end variants and the only remaining vacuum braked only Class 40.

Status of locos at present:

  • 40106 - Fully operational currently on the Bo'ness & Kinniel Railway in Scotland due to arrive at the East Lancs Railway Soon. 
  • 40135 - Fully operational - currently undergoing cosmetic repairs in Loco works at Bury. 
  • 40145 - Out of service - Undergoing 6M/C1 exam and repairs due back in service in June 2016. 
on Friday 13th of May myself and John Stephens attended Bo'ness to carry out an inspection of 40106 after its winter storage in the Bo'ness museum we even managed to give loco a run out to Manuel and back with 37703 in tow the loco performed well with no issues. 

A big thanks for the support and kind assistance by the SRPS staff and allowing us to give loco a test run.

Today's activities 

The team today has been led by Derek Gibson and work has concentrated on stripping D335's boiler for welding repairs to be undertaken  on the exhaust outlet. Cosmetic repairs to D335 have continued with work being concentrated on the nose ends. 

Jeremy has continued the electrical exam on 40145.
